Perspective

Perspective is a particular attitude towards or way of regarding something; a point of view; the way you see something. If you think that toys corrupt children’s minds, then from your perspective a toy shop is an evil place. Remember this only ‘your’ perspective!

Perspective has a Latin root meaning “look through” or “perceive,” and all the meanings of perspective have something to do with looking. If you observe the world from a dog’s perspective, you see through the dog’s eyes.

Let’s take a night out at a party. Let’s say you speak to a few different people individually that were at the same party. You will find some would have the perspective that the party was awesome and others would have the perspective that it was boring, again this is only ‘their’ perspective.

Visit a fashion show and I am sure you would get all different perspectives from all the people who attended the show regarding the fashions that were presented.

Take past events in your life. Recall a past event with family or friends that were present. You may find they will recall the event very differently than yourself and this would just be ‘their’ perspective. Things that would place a bearing on this perspective would be possibly the attitudes of people at the time. What you perceived to be the attitude of one particular person and what they perceived to be the attitude of the person could be totally different. You would both be looking from your own perspective.

This is particularly evident in the recollection of events when you were a child. What perspective you had of an event can be totally different to that of an adult that was present at the same time.

When I was only three years old my father left us. Up until I was thirteen years old I believed he had died. When I mentioned this to my mother she couldn’t understand where I got the idea from. Seems the explanation I was given at the time that he had “gone” I perceived as him having died. Puts a whole new meaning on the saying “Taken or Blown right out of perspective”

Remembering the meaning of perspective when getting into a discussion with others can make it easier to accept their views, as you know it is only their “perspective” and after all we are all entitled to our opinion or perspective. Try not to take the perspective that others have personally.

Have you heard the meaning “Agree to Disagree” can avoid any heated discussions?
